"Iron William and the Carpenter's Tears" is a historical adventure fantasy, the kind of book people will never cease to love. Its roots are in the good old classic heroic adventure story but the writing style is more suggestive of the boy's adventure story as reinterpreted by TV space operas like "Dr Who", or films like "Raiders of the Lost Ark". It's very well researched and surprisingly learned. The author's learning sits lightly inside the story and the history is accurate with great attention to detail, making the fantasy elements really satisfying, enjoyable and thought-provoking.I don't want to talk about the plot in any detail as that will spoil the read for you, except to say the plot twists are exceptionally well done and will keep you surprised and on the edge of your seat. The characters are thoughtfully developed too, and you quickly feel sympathy and interest. Lots of fun, some rich descriptive writing and some good laughs too. A bargain at three times the price.
