Description

Based on the novel by Will Heinrich, Sam Pekinpah’s (The Wild Bunch) only war film is an intense and uncompromising affair that brilliantly reflects both the futility of conflict and the director’s fascination with individuals confronted by events beyond their control.A World War II tale told from the German perspective, Cross Of Iron follows a platoon of German soldiers in Russia when the German Wehrmacht forces had been decimated and the Germans were retreating along the Russian front. Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) is a German corporal and recipient of the Iron Cross who has grown disenchanted with Hitler’s war machine. When Captain Stransky (Maximillian Schell) assumes charge, the pair are thrown into immediate conflict, the autocratic but ultimately cowardly Stransky coveting the loyalty and honour Steiner commands.Evocatively shot by John Coquillon (Billy the Kid) in sombre tones to emphasise the horrors of combat, the superlative lead performances are matched by David Warner and James Mason as war-weary senior officers. Viewed as one of Peckinpah’s most powerful works, it’s an unflinching vision of the Second World War.Special Features: Cast and Crew Interviews Sam Peckinpah's War: documentary by Mike Siegel, featuring James Coburn, Senta Berger, David Warner, Vadim Glowna, Roger Fritz, Katy Haber & Sam Peckinpah

* Review for Imprint Films' release of Cross of Iron 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack *First saw this movie as a kid in the late 1970s on TV then it disappeared. COI was forgotten and really shelved away for decades. No regular network syndicated showings due to provocative era for Germany and the infamous barn scene in this movie that many revolted against. Hence with a sorted production and director with irregular approach there no or little re digitized efforts despite the great DVD push in the 1990s and early 2000s. Some DVD production efforts of this movie were even recorded direct off of VHS replay format.I watched the Grindhouse Version first and was greatly impressed by the idea and a touch of seeing the original theatre viewing German 35mm 1.57:1 ratio with original audio. Florescent green scratches that pass by vertically really give you the feel of raw projector film and the spliced in footage slightly different reel. I am a real big fan of this new interpretation of the theatre presentation and what paying audience saw in 1977. Excellent idea by Imprint.I have seen numerous critiques of this film, make your own decision about the plot and importance in modern film. But it has inspired quite a few modern WWII films as well as new fans of this overlooked edition within the Peckinpah slate. Historically It strongly resembles the real story of Oberfeldwebel / Oberleutnant Johann Schwerdfeger who survived the war and lived to be 99 years old.
